Key Highlights
- Stunning city panoramic views

- Summer on Štros open-air festival
- Romantic shade of chestnut trees
Running along the southern edge of Zagreb's Upper Town, Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo Šetalište, known to locals as "Štros") is one of the city's most romantic and picturesque paths. Shaded by a dense canopy of chestnut trees and decorated with historical gas lanterns, it offers breathtaking panoramic views over the rooftops of the Lower Town.
A Walk Through History and Art
The promenade was laid out in the 19th century on the site of Gradec's former medieval defensive walls. It is named after Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, a crucial patron of Croatian culture, science, and art. Along the path, you'll encounter a famous bronze sculpture of Croatian poet Antun Gustav Matoš sitting on a bench, looking out at the city — one of Zagreb's most popular photo spots.
Summer on Štros & Advent on Štros
Throughout the year, the promenade hosts vibrant community events. During the summer months, the 'Ljeto na Štrosu' (Summer on Štros) festival brings open-air cafes, live acoustic music, art workshops, and theatrical performances, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Montmartre in Paris. In winter, it turns into a magical winter wonderland as one of the key locations for the award-winning Advent in Zagreb.
Photograph Matoš on his bench
Don't miss the chance to sit next to the famous bronze statue of poet Antun Gustav Matoš and take a memorable picture with Zagreb's red roofs in the background.
